Ticks & Lyme Disease

Did you know the leading cause of Lyme disease is the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi, which is passed to humans through the bite of an infected Tick?

If caught early, Lyme disease is curable. But if it’s diagnosed late it can become a chronic condition. Typically spread by ticks so small that they often go unnoticed, Lyme disease can wreck havoc on the body of the infected person. Symptoms of Lyme disease typically include fever, headache, fatigue, and a characteristic skin rash called erythema migrans. However, Infections can spread to joints, the heart, and even the nervous system, if left untreated. One common example of a severe condition that may occur is Bell’s palsy, which is a loss of muscle tone on one or both sides of the face.

The good news here is there are many steps one can take to reduce the possibility of being bitten by a tick, such as using insect repellent, removing ticks promptly, applying pesticides, and reducing tick habitat. Also, most cases of Lyme disease can be successfully treated with a few weeks of antibiotics in the event the disease does occur.
